Make This Easy Chemo Cap for Yourself, Family, Friends, or Donate to Organizations.
Now that it’s Fall, I just have to share this quick and easy crochet chemo cap pattern with you! And while I know it’s still warm for many of us, other areas of the country are already experiencing much cooler temperatures.
Besides, soon it will be winter, and Christmas is only a few weeks away.
So, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a new crochet cap to wear on chilly days, to give as a Christmas gift, or to donate to a charitable organization? If so, then this easy-to-crochet hat pattern is for you.
I began creating this pattern while undergoing treatments for breast cancer, and even though I created this to be a chemo cap, I didn’t want it to look like one.
I wanted the crochet cap to:
- Have the appearance of a cute winter cap.
- Be solid with no holes or spaces to show thinning hair or scalp.
- Have lots of texture and pattern.
- Be soft and keep my head warm.
- Be quick and easy to make.
This Simple Comfort Crochet Cap checks all the boxes on my must-haves list. It has become my go-to pattern for the caps I crochet for cancer patients at my local infusion center and for other charity organizations. I also use it to make gifts for family and friends.
This quick and easy crochet cap pattern uses simple stitches: single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet. The hat comes together quickly. You begin at the crown of the cap and work your way down to the brim. The ribbed band is made using four rows of alternating Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet stitches to create the ribbing effect.
This hat also requires crocheting in the camel stitch. Have you tried the camel stitch? It’s half-double crochet, but instead of placing your hook in the usual first and second loops, you insert your hook in the third back loop. It’s simpler to see it demonstrated than to explain, so if you’re unfamiliar with the camel stitch, check out this video from Red Heart Yarns and The Crochet Crowd below to learn how.
Once you get the hang of it, the camel stitch is really simple to crochet. Using it for this project gives the cap that knitted look I love. This pattern uses four rows of camel stitch followed by a row of double crochet to give it extra texture and dimension.

Materials Needed:
- One skein of 3.5 oz yarn – For the caps you see in the pictures on this post, I used Yarn Bee’s Sweet Divinity yarn (3.5 oz – 243 yards) which I purchased at Hobby Lobby. Since one skein is more than enough to create this hat, I usually purchase two skeins of the same color and can make three hats from them.
